Toms Adds Glasses In A Smart, Social Brand Extension

Toms, famous for hip shoes, is now adding sunglasses to their product line. And just as purchasing a pair of Toms shoes means that the company will donate a pair to someone in the developing world, buying a pair of sunglasses will guarantee prescription glasses or medical care for those in developing countries.

It is a move that will test one of the most enduring and consumer-centric corporate social responsibility strategies to be developed in the last decade. The idea, said founder Blake Mycoskie, is for Toms to be “a one-for-one company,” which sounds a little like he doesn’t plan on stopping at shoes and sunglasses.

CSR is, of course, only half the reason that Toms has been able to give away over 1,000,000 pairs of shoes since its founding in 2006. Its target market is populated by the stylishly hip who go for the shoes designed in the Argentinean alpargata style, which is also chic, urbane and pared down. The companies that succeed at brand extensions do so by keeping the essence of their brand in mind at all times when making the move. This sounds pretty simple when written, but can be a challenge during the exciting and sometimes tumultuous move into a new product line. Knowing that your fans buy your product is not nearly enough – knowing how they use that product and why they identify with it is imperative.

Outgoing Prime Minister Apolo Nsibambi has asked the 9th Parliament to amend some of the rules of procedure to have at least 20 per cent of the MPs present as quorum to pass any laws. He said this yesterday while handing over office to his successor, Amama Mbabazi, the former security minister.

Prof. Nsibambi, who took Mr Amama through a thorough orientation before handing him a comprehensive written report, said he had serious issues raising quorum of the necessary numbers to vote in Parliament. “You must ensure ministers attend until the end of the session,new air max tn including all back-benchers of the NRM,” he said. “You must work closely with the Speaker, her deputy and the Leader of Opposition.”

Revisit rules
The current rules of Parliament demand that for any laws to be passed there must be at least 33 per cent of the total number of MPs entitled to vote. “This number is too high.ritain only has 40 (six per cent) MPs out of the 600 MPs who can pass a law,” he said, asking that such a matter should be revisited. “Sometimes we had political paralysis on some matters and we didn’t have the numbers to pass the vote; but when you consult with the LoP, things can cool and wait for another day,” he said.

There are 375 elected MPs who have the mandate to vote which means that to pass any law, 125 MPs should be present in the House. Prof. Nsibambi challenged his successor to rein in on some ministers who do not want to perform. He said his office always held monthly meetings, assessed the performance and got reports from other ministers. “Those who don’t want to work should be summoned to your office and must explain if it’s their permanent secretaries failing them or if it is finance or they are over worked,” he said.

Meanwhile in his acceptance speech, Mr Mbabazi said he would not even fit in Prof. Nsibambi’s shoes “because they wear different sizes”.giuseppe zanotti Supreme Blue is in fact not a primarily blue shoe. Wis. Protesters Share Iraqi Shoe-Thrower Award

The public workers and students in Wisconsin wore out a lot of shoe leather in their months of protest against the conservatives' attacks on working people.
